What is insomnia?
Insomnia is difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep with the following symptoms: extreme tiredness, low energy, difficulty focusing, irritability, mood swings, decreased functionality, daytime sleepiness, lethargy...
The medical establishment sees insomnia as sleep disorder that can lead to chronic diseases. The causes of insomnia for them include psychological factors, medications, and hormone levels, and the treatment for this ‘illness’ can be medical or behavioural or both.
The people who are suffering from insomnia should not think of it as a disease. Insomnia is not an illness. Do not categorize it. Visiting a doctor is meaningless. Insomnia is not your problem; the uncontrollable, anxious mind is your problem. What is the cure for the anxious mind? Meditation.
As mind is continuously thinking during the day, it forms a habit of it. Then, at night, when you want to sleep, the mind goes on thinking and thinking, it goes on unwinding itself, and that keeps you awake. As the body is connected to the mind, you end up with an anxious body too. Your body needs rest, but your mind is not allowing it and you have no control over it. So many sidelines of thoughts which have been left incomplete during the day or during the previous days, years, life times; they have to be completed. The mind refuses to accept any standard short of perfection. Whatsoever has remained unfinished, has to be finished.
There are three kinds of problems of which the mind thinks constantly.
The first one is self-created problems of life. You are the creator, the maintainer and the destroyer of your life. First you create your problems, then you think: “I don’t want these problems.” A double whammy.
The second type of problems are those that you adopted by living with people. Once you understand consciously that the problems internalized from others have nothing to do with you, they are totally gone from your mind.
The third problem of the mind is about the Unknown, about the mystery of that that is beyond known. This problem has nothing to do with you or with others. This third problem it is not a problem at all, because it is part of existence itself. The mind cannot be in the existence, so it sees it as a problem.
Insomnia is a result of the identification with those three mind problems and the best cure is Meditation.
When all self-created problems and all problems created by others have disappeared form your mind, the third problem, the unknown, is not perceived as a problem any longer, but as a mystery. Mystery is all around us, but the mind converts it into a problem in order to control the existence and justify its own.
In meditation, life is a mystery, consciousness is a mystery, love is a mystery, compassion is a mystery, death is a mystery, existence is a mystery... How can you explain the mystery? How can you think about the mystery? It cannot be explained, it cannot be thought. You can go on knowing it, but the more you know, the more you will have a feeling that you don’t know and the mystery is no longer a problem.
