CHAKRA MEDITATION
Chakra Purification Meditation
In the chakra purification meditation, we use the sounds and their seed (bija) syllables as an aid to focus in on the pre-existing energy vibration singing at each chakra. Seed sound is the syllables’ corresponding vibratory sound energy. Bring your awareness and listening to this seed sound, rather than projecting a sound onto it.
The word “seed” indicates that a potential can grow from it. This meditation leads the spirit, lost in thought, concepts of reality, and the pursuit of worldly matters, back to no-thin—that is, to pure essence, which is the source of infinite health.
There are a few different ways to use seed sounds effectively. One is to not vocalize the sounds at all, but rather repeat the syllables in the mind in a way that evokes the feeling associated with each syllable. To use this form of seed sound, it isn’t necessary to be in a place suitable for saying the sounds aloud. We can say them as we wash dishes, garden, drive, prepare food, or shop.
Another way to effectively use seed sounds is to intone the syllables in a soft voice that emanates from the diaphragm and vibrates through the tongue. We don't need to chant them out loud; we can energize them in our body. If we are in a place where it’s okay to intone the seed sounds out loud, such as in our home or in the wilderness, this is a bonus. Sound can help us control habits, overcoming fear, address specific ailments, find inner peace, gain wisdom, and increase mental clarity. In other words, sound can heal.
For this, we sit with our spine straight and our head in alignment with our body. The breath should be deep and full. As we chant the sound, weremember to open up to both the resonance of the voice and the vibration of the body where the chakra spins. We remain in silence for a minute or two between each chakra.
The table below lists the seed sounds that access the elemental qualities of the Chakras.
LAM for the Root Chakra
Curve the tip of your tongue up and back, and place it on the rear section of the upper palate to pronounce a sound like the word alum, without the initial “a.”
VAM for the Naval Chakra
Place your upper teeth on the inner section of your lower lip and begin with a breathy consonant to imitate the sound of a fast moving car. Pronounce the mantra like "fvam."
RAM for the Solar Plexus Chakra
Place the tip of your tongue on the roof of the front section of your upper palate, roll the “r,” and pronounce the mantra like the first part of the word rum-ble.
YAM for the Heart Chakra
Pronounce the sound like the word yum (as in yummy).
HAM for the Throat Chakra
Pronounce the word hum (as in humming); allow the breath to extend beyond the resolution of the consonant.
OM for the Third Eye Chakra
Pronounce the sound as a subtly audible whisper, allowing the sound and breath to resonate in the cranial area.
AH for the Crown Chakra
Pronounced AH by forming the sound in the rear of the palate.
